Crisis facing Norwegian shipbuilding industry

The Norwegian shipbuilding industry fears that 2004 will be a critical year for the industry.

The Norwegian shipbuilding industry fears that 2004 will be a critical year for the industry.

Norwegian yards have new contracts to build only 20 ships next year, covering only 15 per cent of the total capacity.

If further contracts for the yards are not forthcoming, several thousand jobs may be in danger, according to spokesmen for the industry.

Their greatest fear is that some yards will be closed down, which would mean that the Norwegian shipbuilding industry would lose competence.
