Concern over Russian oil transport in Norwegian coastal waters

Norwegian Environmental Minister Boerge Brende says the Russian plans for using large tankers to transport oil from Murmansk south along the Norwegian coast are alarming. Brende said this during a visit to Murmansk, where he had talks with Governor Jurij A. Jevdokimov. High on the agenda was contingency plans for combating possible oil spills in the Barents Sea, in particular from the planned oil transport. Brende said the Arctic region was vulnerable, and he feared that the Russian emergency plans for dealing with oil spills does not have the capacity to deal with spills involving the large tankers used for the oil transport.
