Clare Island Organic Salmon from Ireland at Boston Seafood Show
Marine Harvest farms Irish organic salmon in the lee of Clare Island, which is four miles off the coast of County Mayo in the west of Ireland. These excellent organic fish are featured for the first time by Marine Harvest at the International Boston Seafood Show, in continued co-operation with ISPG and BIM.
Raised on Clare Island Sea Farm, one of the worlds most exposed salmon farms, Clare Island Organic Salmon are nourished with a balanced diet containing only organic and natural ingredients from sustainable sources, free from genetically modified organisms. The pink color of salmon is acquired naturally in the wild from the crustaceans they eat. This is replicated by the presence of Phaffia, a natural yeast, in the organic feed.
The Clare Island Sea Farm uses low population densities, in line with organic welfare concepts. This calculates out at just 0.5% to 1% of fish by volume in the water, less than half that of conventional farms. A constant 2-knot flow and high tidal exchange rates continuously flush the pens with oceanic water, avoiding any build up of parasites or pollutants. The Irish Atlantic waters the salmon live in are classed as 1A in quality the best there is. This natural, healthy environment and low population density allows the fish to develop firm muscle texture and good body shape.
Underlining their outstanding merit, the Clare Island salmon are certified by the organic authorities of no fewer than four European countries France, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland. Each authority conducts an annual audit to ensure the highest organic standards are maintained.
