Changes in the 2014 FRIPRO funding announcements

Some of the criteria for Young Research Talents and Personal Post-doctoral Research Fellowships under the FRIPRO funding scheme have been revised in the 2014 call for proposals.

Applications for funding for independent projects under the FRIPRO scheme may be submitted starting on 9 April. The final application submission deadline is 21 May.

For the most part the criteria remain the same as in 2013, but some revisions have been made for the application types Young Research Talents and Personal Post-doctoral Research Fellowships.

The Research Council of NorwayThe application type Young Research Talents was introduced in 2013 to encourage younger, highly skilled researchers to seek a career in research. The application type is targeted towards researchers under the age of 39 with less than eight years’ experience after having completed their doctorate. Project managers must satisfy stringent requirements regarding their capacity to work independently, scientific maturity and researcher potential.

Starting in 2014 an additional requirement has been introduced stipulating that at least two years must have passed between the date of the successful defence of a doctoral thesis and the application submission deadline.

“It is difficult for the least experienced applicants to demonstrate the degree of independence we are asking for. Last year, funding was awarded to only one of the 45 applicants with less than two years’ experience after completing their doctorate. A minimum requirement for experience after degree completion is needed so as not to generate false hopes among applicants from this group,” says Øyvind Pettersen, head of the FRIPRO advisory group at the Research Council of Norway.

The project managers awarded funding for Young Research Talents projects last year had an average of 5.4 years of experience after degree completion.

Research stay abroad required for post-doctoral fellows

While last year’s call for proposals for Personal Post-doctoral Research Fellowships stated that fellowship-holders at Norwegian research institutions were encouraged to conduct a research stay abroad during the project period, this has been made a requirement in this year’s call.

The research stay must have a duration of three to 12 months, and an invitation from the host institution abroad must be submitted with the grant application.

New mobility grant under the FRIPRO scheme

Young researchers seeking a period abroad should take note of a new mobility grant for young researchers which is being offered this year for the first time. The grant scheme is open to applicants in all fields and disciplines, and the application submission deadline is also 21 May.
