In 2009, Gassnova selected Scandpower to perform a quantitative risk analysis (QRA) of storing CO2 in the large subsea Utsira sand formation in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Gassnova is an enterprise established by the Norwegian state in 2007 to manage government interests relating to and involvement in projects on CO2 capture, transport and storage.
The QRA was carried out in accordance with the requirements set out in the EU Directive on Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide, 2009/31/EC. The aim of the analysis was to identify potential leakage pathways, to estimate the probabilities and leakage rates of the identified leakage pathways and, finally, to evaluate the consequences of leakages on human health and the environment, both in the short and the long term. A method for estimating the influence area in the sea due to increased pH as a consequence of CO2 leakage from the reservoir was developed as part of the project. To execute the project, Scandpower brought experts on CO2 storage and reservoir geology from the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) into the project team. This collaboration – in combination with Scandpower’s excellent understanding and extensive experience of mapping and evaluating risks – turned out to be very successful.
The company believes that the risk model developed as part of the project forms a sustainable and solid basis for undertaking this type of analysis.
In December 2010, Scandpower, together with Lloyd’s Register Martec and Lloyd’s Register ODS, started work on a new CCS project to develop a risk management roadmap for onshore carbon capture and storage in Canada. The project is funded by CCS Nova Scotia, a not-for-profit corporation whose members include the Province of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Power and Dalhousie University. The aim of the project is to develop a risk management strategy that allows for the storage of large amounts of CO2 in a safe, reliable and environmentally beneficial manner.
