Avea, Yandex and Opera celebrate summer by giving away 100,000 weeks of free internet

Imagine having almost 2,000 years of free internet access on a mobile phone. That is what Yandex and Opera Software are now giving away to Avea customers in Turkey. Of course, the 100,000 weeks of free internet access won’t be given to a single subscriber, but fairly divided among 100,000 subscribers, who will each receive one free week of mobile internet access.

People who already use the Opera Mini browser in the Avea network are two quick clicks away from enjoying free browsing. To get a free week of internet surfing, they just have to open Opera Mini on their phones and select the “web pass” option in the Speed Dial. The week of free internet access will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to help highlight Yandex services in Turkey, after viewing an ad.

How does it work?

Behind the scenes, Opera is using its novel Opera Web Pass platform to realize this campaign. Opera Web Pass is a way for those without data plans to quickly and easily purchase mobile web access directly from their Opera browser. The web pass offerings are easy to understand, most often based on a time metric such as “one week free” or “one day of Facebook access for 1 euro”, rather than the more difficult to grasp megabyte metric.

“This offering, 100,000 weeks of free internet to Avea’s users, is a pretty exciting way to show what Opera’s new web pass technology can offer to operators and advertisers,” says Jan Standal, VP for Product Partnerships, Opera Software. “With Opera Web Pass, the relevant ad is associated directly with something very positive - free internet access. The reach of consumers on Opera Mini is large, about 250 million consumers use Opera Mini every month, and Opera Software works with more than 130 operators on various projects around the world.”

Starting June this year, the 100,000 weeks of Yandex-sponsored internet access will be distributed to all applicable Avea consumers, until the number of available weeks has run out.

How to get it

Activating the free week of internet access is easy. Just open the Opera Mini browser on the phone and select the Avea Web Pass option in the Speed Dial. In the menu, select “1 week free web pass” option and it’s done!
