An embarrassment of riches

The state's tax revenues have been far higher in 2000 than the government anticipated in its annual budget.

Some USD 4.7 billion (NOK 43 billion) more than expected has trickled into the state treasury, of which USD 2.9 million (NOK 26 billion) has come from increased revenues from the oil sector. The additional USD 1.8 billion (NOK 17) has come from increase tax revenues from the rest of the economy. Conservative party leaders said the windfall proves that the tax cut they proposed last year would have been appropriate.
