Alu Design renews world’s first combined chair and deck rail certification

Alu Design & Services (Alu Design) has today announced that it has been awarded upgraded type approval by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for its Alutech 200, 400 and 500 series of pilot chairs. Alu Design has also received similar approval for its Alutech 3200, 3300, 3400 & 3500 series of deck rails.

These approvals means that both the chairs and deck rails comply with the International Code of Safety for High-Speed Craft (HSC), 2000, annex 10 - meaning they can withstand forces of between three and 12g. Significantly, the company believes this is the first time ever that DNV - or any other classification society - has issued a combined approval for both chair and deck rails.

The HSC approval rating is a requirement for products used on fast ferries, but the rating also means that it covers other craft, including crew, supply and Navy vessels.

Commenting on the announcement, Frank Robertsen, Marketing Director of Alu Design, stated: “We are delighted to have received approvals from DNV for this upgraded certification following intensive testing of our chairs and rails. This type approval is mandatory for us to be able to deliver to vessels requiring HSC certification, but it is also further proof of Alu Design’s dedication to safety and quality.”

Robertsen added: “This announcement follows DNV’s earlier confirmation that none of ALU Design’s deck rails is deemed an obstruction to the floor of the bridge. This is critical to demonstrating that our rails contribute to the safe design of a vessel’s bridge.”
