Algea Lead registrant for Ascophyllum nodosum extract

Algea, as a major producer of extracts of Ascophyllum nodosum, was the only company to register the A. nosodum extract (EC 283-907-6) in 2010 and in fact acted as Lead Registrant for this substance. Algea’s registration was successfully submitted in November 2010.

In 2006, Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 was published by the European Union, and entered into force in June 2007. The REACH regulation streamlines and improves the former legislative framework for chemicals of the European Union (EU) and EEA countries.  Under REACH, it is necessary for producers/importers to register chemical substances unless registered for other fields of use such as food, feed, biocides, plant protection, and medicine.
The Registration deadlines are based on tonnage bands and dangerous properties of the particular substance. When more than one company must register the same substance, REACH requires that a Lead Registrant is appointed. The Lead Registrant generates the registration dossier and is the first to register. The other companies then follow with a Joint Submission registration later on. This allows common data to be shared, thereby reducing costs for everybody.

Algea is now cooperating with other potential registrants in the SIEF (Substance Information Exchange Forum) for this substance, providing common data to be used by other potential registrants.
