A super ferry from Norway

A newly developed aluminium ferry boat for up to 120 cars is twice as fast, safer and cleaner than today's models.

Fjellstrand A/S's FerryCat 120, an 80-m-long catamaran whose four engines will push it along at 24 knots, is expected to capture markets abroad as well as to become a workhorse for the state highway authorities along the highly indented Norwegian coastline. Two FerryCat 120s will be able to do the work of three conventional ferries while cutting the fuel bill dramatically. The Norwegian Research Council, the highway authorities, Norsk Hydro, Rolls-Royce Marine, Marintek and Det norske Veritas have all had a hand in designing the unique vessel, the first example of which may enter service in 2002.
