Opportunities and challenges
The preliminary work programme focuses particularly on the significance of the petroleum sector to society. It also targets the opportunities and challenges relating to the recovery of the remaining resources on the Norwegian continental shelf, and the need for research, educational programmes, competence-building and a higher pace of innovation in order to achieve optimal utilisation of these resources.
The new petroleum research programme will support research and technology development for enhancing recovery from fields in production, exploration in immature areas, raising energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and improving health, safety and the work environment (HSE).
Per Gerhard Grini (Chief Researcher Upstream Technology at Statoil) headed the committee that drew up the preliminary work programme, which was approved by the Research Board of the Division for Energy, Resources and the Environment on 15 June.
The programme board, to be appointed in September, will be responsible for developing and finalising the work programme. An English version of the work programme is being prepared and will be published on this website in august.

The work programme establishes the formal framework and focus of the programme in a long-term perspective and provides guidelines regarding thematic priority areas and other priorities for companies and institutions seeking funding under the programme. The work programme will provide the basis for funding announcements for the entire programme period, 2013-2022.
The preliminary work programme that has been drawn up will serve as the basis for a planned call for proposals for Innovation Projects for the Industrial Sector. The application submission deadline for this call is 17 October 2012. The call is scheduled to be published during the summer.
Calls for proposals for Knowledge-building Projects for Industry and Researcher Projects are planned issued in October 2012, with a deadline of February 2013.
