Dolphin Interconnect Solutions ASA today announced 'Dolphin Express', it's integrated architecture for delivering industry leading database cluster application response time and throughput supporting standard cluster applications such as Oracle RAC and MySQL Cluster. Additionally, Dolphin introduced its first products implementing the Dolphin Express architecture which are available immediately.  Dolphin Express is a layered software and hardware architecture tuned by Dolphin to seamlessly integrate standard off-the-shelf cluster applications and standard low cost servers. Dolphin Express provides the highest application performance for database cluster applications and provides the lowest total cost of ownership and operation.

Dolphin Express software, called SuperSockets, provides a low latency 'sockets' interface for standard cluster applications. The standard interfaces of Dolphin Express software insure complete software application compatibility while allowing for the evolution to faster and more powerful hardware technology over time.  Customers can easily adopt Dolphin Express now and guarantee long term investment protection of their application software. Dolphin Express hardware leverages the industry move to PCI Express and consists of super low latency interconnect modules that plug into standard PCI Express slots in standard servers supporting cost effective clusters from 2 to 100's of database nodes. Over time Dolphin Express will leverage direct connection to PCI Express IO devices and other PCI Express developments including Gen2 physical layer (5Gbps/lane) and PCI Express IOV technology.

The database cluster market is expanding rapidly and is projected to grow to over 500,000 nodes by 2008 at a growth rate in excess of 15% annually. This growth is driven by requirements for high availability and high throughput from ever larger databases. Applications ranging from web services, real time data analysis, business intelligence, data warehousing to telecom infrastructure are fueling the rapid growth of database clusters. The move to database clusters is also a focus on cost efficiency and saving money with a requirement for handling large database problems with attractive price performance.  Dolphin Express is ideally suited to complement applications like MySQL Cluster and Oracle RAC.  MySQL Cluster is a special high-end version of the MySQL database specifically designed for fault-tolerant, mission-critical applications that need strict scalability and high-availability and Oracle RAC is a high availability highly scalable version of Oracle's industry leading database system.

"Dolphin Express is the ideal high end complement to Ethernet as the cluster interconnect for MySQL Cluster" said Mikael Ronstrom, the founder of the MySQL Cluster technology. "The testing I have completed shows the Dolphin Express solution to provide up to a 4x transaction rate advantage over Ethernet.  We have worked closely with Dolphin to leverage the unique low latency characteristics of their technology which are so critical to high throughput database clusters."

"This announcement is representative of our long term commitment to deliver leadership performance to users of database clusters" said Kåre Løchsen, Dolphin CEO. "We believe Dolphin's core competencies, and the technology we have developed over the past decade are ideally suited to provide value to the growing database cluster market with its demanding requirements for throughput, scale and high availability.  We intend to be a major player in this market for years to come"
