15 Million NOK to Sandy Victims in Haiti and Cuba

Norway provides NOK 15 million NOK for emergency relief to hurricane victims in Haiti and Cuba.

Hurricane Sandy hit two poor island states Haiti and Cuba before it hit the US’s east coast.

- Now it is important that victims find shelter. We need to provide clean drinking water and health services, says Norwegian Development Minister Heikki Eidsvoll Holmås.

In Cuba, 150,000 houses were damaged. Schools and hospitals were also destroyed. Haiti still struggles with the reconstruction of the country after the powerful earthquake having struck in 2010.

Sandy hurricane destroyed 15,000 houses in Haiti. Camps for the 350,000 who are still homeless after the earthquake in 2010 were damaged again.

Cholera has already killed more than 7,500 people in Haiti since the earthquake.

For the last ten years, 15 tropical storms and hurricanes have hit the island state. Holmås was there right after the hurricane and saw Sandy’s devastation closely.

- I met people who had lost their crops, livestock, and their homes. They need help to continue their daily life, says Holmås.
