NPD Bulletin 10 is a manuscript about stratigraphic surveys of intermediate to upper geological strata across the entire Norwegian shelf, on land in Denmark, on Svalbard and the continental shelf east of Greenland.
The surveys examine sediments deposited between 35 and 2.5 million years ago. The manuscript is interactive.
Detailed stratigraphic studies of large water-bearing aquifers that are candidates for CO2 storage and injection of drilling mud are some examples of what is addressed in the surveys.
The results of the studies will e.g. provide important information towards understanding hydrocarbon maturation and migration. The comparison includes surveys undertaken by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate over the course of approx. 25 years.
The NPD bulletins summarise the current lithostratigraphic nomenclature (naming designations) on the Norwegian shelf. Stratigraphy is the part of geology that deals with the study of stratification, age, composition and distribution of deposited sediments and rock types.
