Statoil Petroleum AS, operator of production licence 502, has completed the drilling of appraisal well 16/5-3 on the 16/2-6 Johan Sverdrup oil discovery.
The discovery was proven by Lundin Norway AS in the autumn of 2010 in the central part of the North Sea. The reservoir is in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks. Well 16/5-3 was drilled about six kilometres south of well 16/2-15 and five kilometres southwest of well 16/5-2.
The well encountered a gross oil column of 13.5 metres in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks, of which about 12 metres were of good reservoir quality as expected. The oil/water contact was not encountered, but pressure readings show that the area is part of the Johan Sverdrup discovery.
