The project " RETROSPECT - ocean analysis using optimal observation strategies", funded by the Research Council of Norway, has a vacant 3-year PhD grant at IMR. The main objective of RETROSPECT is to produce high resolution reanalyses of the ocean state off Northern Norway, using observations both for assimilation and evaluation, and to utilize the model fields for quantifying exposure of planktonic organisms to pollutants. The PhD candidate will focus on the latter part of the main objective.
The candidate will be placed in the research group "Oceanography and Climate" atIMR and the workplace will be Bergen. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Bergen, Geophysical Institute. The work will be done in collaboration with scientists at The Norwegian Meteorological Institute and Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre.
The candidate should have experience in numerical modeling, and must hold a Master degree or equivalent. We are seeking broadly among thematic backgrounds of the successful candidate. Backgrounds in biology, oceanography or mathematics would be highly relevant, but others would also be considered. The successful candidate will contribute to the cross-disciplinary effort in coupling the ocean reanalysis, in-situ field data and biophysical models for planktonic drift. Experience in biophysical modelling and biological processes are required. The candidate will take part in field campaigns planned for 2016 and 2017.
Applicants should have experience with fortran or similar programming languages, in addition to a model output processing tools e.g. matlab or python. Highly motivated candidates with both collaborative skills and the ability to work independently will be preferred. Since results will be disseminated in international journals, the candidate should have good communication skills in both written and oral English. Furthermore, the candidate must have the ability to work efficiently, be target-oriented, and perform and report project activities.
The candidate must take part in an approved study programme leading to a PhD degree to be completed within a time period of 3 years. It is therefore a requirement that the candidate meet the criteria for admission to the PhD programme at the University of Bergen. A final plan for completion of the research programme must be approved by the faculty within three months after the candidate has formally started.
