PhD Research Scholarships within Timber Structures (IVT 126/13) Jobbnorge ID: 98050

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim represents academic 

eminence in technology and the natural sciences as well as in other academic disciplines ranging 

from the social sciences, the arts, medicine, teacher education, architecture to fine art. Cross-disciplinary 

cooperation results in innovative breakthroughs and creative solutions with far-reaching 

social and economic impact. 

One to three PhD scholarships will be available within the Timber Structures research group at NTNU, Department of Structural Engineering. The positions will, with reservation of final approval, mainly be financed by the Research Council of Norway through the ERA-NET project «Durable Timber Bridges». The scholarship is awarded for a period of 3 years; but also a 4 years period with 25% of the time allocated to teaching/tutoring may be considered. The project will start as soon as possible after January 1 2014. 

The «Durable Timber Bridges» project consortium consists of 20 partners in 4 countries. The main goal of the project is to develop durable timber bridges with a given estimated technical lifetime. The scientific and technological objectives are related to; exposure model related to risk of decay validated for a given set of timber bridges, performance model relating microclimate representative for wooden bridge elements to the risk of their decay, methodology to account for uncertainties in service life design of timber bridges, a set of design concepts for durable timber bridges in the span 10 - 150 m, splicing technology for massive block-glued glulam cross-sections for bridges and fatigue strength criteria for axial threaded rod (screw) connectors. The project also intends to work on stress-laminated wooden decks and details of wooden deck-plates, and on design integrated maintenance concepts for timber bridges. 

The PhD scholarships are allocated to the part of the project working mainly on design concepts for timber bridges. The PhD applicant is expected to have good cooperative skills, to carry out experimental research and to develop advanced numerical models within the scope of the project, and to publish scientific work in recognized journals. Knowledge of the European basis of design of buildings and structures and of FEM software packages like Abaqus is considered as an advantage. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you need to have a relevant Master's degree, or equivalent within structural engineering or mechanics, and you must also qualify for admittance as a PhD student at NTNU, See page Documentation of English proficiency, if English or a Scandinavian language is not the applicant's mother tongue, is needed. The PhD scholarship holder will be required to work in Trondheim, together with the rest of the research group. PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at wage level 50, 

gross NOK 420 800 before tax. The salary is adjusted according to the recent wage negotiations, 

and given subject to the final approval of the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament). There will be a 

2 % deduction for superannuation.
